April Writing Prompts

April, traditionally a rainy month, is a good time to contemplate the wisdom we all have within us. The writing prompts for this month are inspired by Native American teachings found in, Medicine Cards and Sacred Path Cards by Jamie Sams. Read the prompt and then spend at least five minutes writing your response to the question or commentary. If the prompt inspires you, keep writing.

April 1 Writing Prompt: Fertility.

Are you being as fertile or prolific in your writing (or in your life) as you would like? Write about what it would take for you to become more fertile with your words, your work, your relationships. What seeds need to be planted?

March 31 Writing Prompt: Facing Reality

So often the reality of a situation is so painful, we refuse to face it. Write about a situation where an individual (maybe yourself) refuses to face reality. What is this person avoiding? Why is he or she afraid to fact the truth of a particular situation?

March 30 Writing Prompt: Tradition

Write about a family tradition that you have carried on or plan on continuing. Write about a family tradition that drives you crazy. Are traditions important or not?

March 29 Writing Prompt:

Imagine being married for 25 years and discovering that your spouse has been unfaithful for many of them. Many people would be angry and upset or blame themselves. There are other options. Make this common situation interesting by coming up with an atypical reaction to this discovery.

March 28 Writing Prompt: Passing Judgment

It’s easy to judge others, but often the people we judge have a different story once we get to know them. Write about a situation where you erroneously passed judgment. Include how you felt when you discovered the truth.

March 27 Writing Prompt: Nonverbal Communication

Much of what we understand about people comes from what they do, not what they say. Write a scene where two people are angry with one another, but neither is willing to say a word. Be sure to include the location of the scene and the senses: touch, taste, sight, sound, smell.
