This prompt is based on the song title, A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. Change can be a good thing, but it can also be frightening. What changes are you anticipating and how do they make you feel? What can you do to make the inevitable transition easier or smoother? What conversations do you need to have? What actions do you need to take. Write a scene where two characters work through the situation you are about to face.

August 13 Writing Prompt:

This prompt is based on the song title, My Generation by The Who. Write about your generation. What makes it unique? Do you fit the stereotype or not? In fifty years, what do you think people will say about your generation? In 100 years, what consequences do you think the inaction, action, or reaction of your generation will have on the global community?

August 12 Writing Prompt:

This prompt is based on the song title, Respect by Aretha Franklin. We all like to be respected, but sometimes we aren’t. When was the last time you were disrespected? When was the last time you disrespected someone? Were the actions justified? How did being disrespected make you feel? Perhaps you need to apologize. If so, write a scene where your apology is not accepted.

August 11 Writing Prompt:

This prompt is based on the song title, Runaway by Del Shannon. What would you like to run away from? What have you run from? If you ran away, where would you go? Who would you take with you? More importantly, why are you staying if you really would like to leave?

August 10 Writing Prompt:

This prompt is based on the song title, Fat Lip by Sum 41.

Have you ever been punched in the face or punched someone? Better, have you ever wanted to punch someone but managed to control yourself? If you’ve ever had a fat lip or wanted to give one to someone, write about the experience that led you to that tipping point. What emotions were you feeling? What were the consequences of your actions?

Write about someone who is or who thinks they are the toast of the town. What did they do? How does the recognition they receive make you feel? Do they deserve it? Why or why not.What would you have to do to become the toast of the town? Would you want to be in this enviable position?

What makes you, you? What traits and attributes set you apart from others? In what ways to you stand out in a crowd? Perhaps you wish you were someone else. Who would that be and why? For fun, create a character based on the most unique and distinctive part of yourself.

If you have a day job, write about it, or write about the one you wish you had, or the one you wish you could quit. What would be your ideal employment situation? Write about the steps you could take to create a better five o’clock world for yourself.

August 6 Writing Prompt:

This prompt is based on the song title, Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarmclock.

The smell of incense can be overpowering, a strong scent people either love or hate. Same is true with peppermint. Its taste either delights or overwhelms the palate. Is something overpowering you, or are you overpowering to others? Perhaps the song title reminds you of church or a love-in. Whatever it is, just write about it.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned in life? Pick one of the most compelling and write about it. You might want to apply this lesson to a character you’re writing about. Or perhaps you want to write about an experience you had in school or something else this song title brings up.
